When I watched The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya for the first time, I was deeply amused. The anime is about Kyon, who encounters Haruhi Suzumiya and is forced to join the club she has created. Haruhi herself is a human who can subconsciously manipulate reality. Yuki Nagato is a humanoid, created by “Data Integration Thought Entity”, an advanced lifeform. She was sent to Earth to accompany Haruhi in her adventures, so she would not cause drastic changes to reality. Itsuki Koizumi is a schoolboy who gained supernatural abilities due to Haruhi’s influence on reality. Mikuru Asahina is a time traveler, sent from the future to look after Haruhi. And here is Kyon, a schoolboy. The movie itself focused on the importance of feelings, portraying them as “errors” of Yuki Nagato, which led her step by step to an emotional breakdown, creating a chain of effects that altered reality.
Living the life of a schoolgirl with her friends changes Nagato’s humanoid nature to recognize feelings. Day by day, experiencing interesting, fun, extraordinary activities started by Haruhi, she starts to evolve. She develops her feelings towards her club members and Kyon. The alternate reality’s Yuki implies that during those adventures she developed romantic feelings as well, pointing to Kyon. The main reality’s Yuki was evolving to the point where she would experience genuine feelings and love. But unlike humans, her “program” recognizes them as “errors”. And they were accumulating. A lot.
When she reached the emotional breaking point, she experienced a breakdown. She wanted to live a simple life, with few problems and worries, and most of all, to experience genuine feelings. Nagato decided the best way to accomplish that – rewrite reality.
After Nagato successfully rewrote the reality, Kyon, as the one Nagato valued the most, was pulled into it with all of his memories. During his exploration of the new world, he begins to lose his temper and composure, barely keeping up with his thoughts and fears in check. All because someone was missing, who was Haruhi. During the two days that Kyon lived in an alternative reality, he found himself at the very bottom of his spirit, where he almost gave in and accepted everyone’s view of the world.
By pure accident, Kyon hears about Haruhi actually existing in this reality, but in a different school. He rushes to the school where he heard Haruhi was in, where he reunites with Itsuki Koizumi, his other club friend, and Haruhi herself. Alongside these two, he joins the two remaining members of their club, Yuki Nagato and Mikuru Asahina, finding a way to his return to the main reality. As he was fighting with his thoughts along this whole journey, he understands what really mattered to him. He understood that whilst he was always grumpy and critical to Haruhi's adventures, he cannot live without them, as it feels empty and lonely. In the end, Nagato gets her message to Kyon, who starts to recognize her as a human being with her own feelings, and not as just a perfect humanoid.
In conclusion, Nagato’s emotional “errors” caused her breakdown, resulting in the almost permanent change of reality, Kyon’s emotional development, Yuki’s own emotional development, and in a wonderful anime. The movie demonstrates that the emotional struggles and pain is not always visible, and whilst you may not think of them as a big deal, they might be. By the movie’s ending, I realized how important it is to value things I have, how important are feelings, and how big their effect might be.
